For the Spring 2023 edition of Chapter III, the quarterly newsletter of the Federal Dispute Resolution Section of the Law Council of Australia, James Green has written a review of the book ‘The Australian Class Action, A 30-Year Perspective‘ (Federation Press).
The book is published on the 30th anniversary of class actions being introduced into Australian dispute resolution. The text reflects on the major themes and controversies that have arisen during the operation of class actions in the country. It considers: the initial objectives for the procedure; how the core requirements of the justice system apply in the class action context; the role of lawyers and litigation funders; and examines class actions through lenses such as law, economics, comparative law and politics.
