Commencing 19 March 2020 for a period of three years Christopher Johnstone will be an inaugural member of Australia’s National Sports Tribunal (NST). The NST will facilitate “…the fair hearing and resolution of sporting disputes” to sporting organisations, athletes and athlete support personnel in “…an independent, timely, transparent, cost-effective and reliable forum”. As one of an initial panel of 40 members Christopher will form “…a diverse panel of independent arbitrators, mediators, legal and subject matter experts called upon to provide arbitration, mediation, conciliation and case appraisal to the Australian sporting community”.
Christopher has expertise in sports law and has advised athletes and ASADA in respect of anti-doping matters and has appeared for ASADA in the Court of Arbitration for Sport. He has also assisted Australian athletes in appeals against selection for Commonwealth Games and Olympic teams, and has appeared in various tribunals in respect of disciplinary matters.
